Shared Workspace

What is a shared workspace?

Shared workspaces are areas in which several people work alongside each other, but do not necessarily collaborate on the same project. The workspace is fixed and the people are dynamic. A desk in a shared workspace is occupied by many different people throughout the day, and those people don’t have to return to that same desk the next day.

Shared Workspace versus Office Sharing

A shared workspace is a third-party-owned area in which employees from multiple companies or independent contractors can share equipment and ideas. These spaces generate an atmosphere of like-minded people who network and create a community together. On the other hand, office sharing is when an entity owns or leases an office for their employees, but rents out a portion of unused space to another, smaller company. The larger company receives income on the unused portion of their office, and the smaller company gains access to office space. Office sharing is not open to independent contractors or other businesses. A shared workspace is open to everyone, all the time.

Who can use a shared workspace?

Shared workspaces are open to everyone. The type of people that can benefit from the use of a shared workspace are freelancers, digital nomads, entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, consultants, small teams, remote teams, remote workers, start-ups, small businesses, and larger companies who need a change of scenery. Working from home or on the go can be distracting and isolating. By using a shared workspace, independent contractors and entrepreneurs can socialize, collaborate, and network with like-minded individuals while enjoying the benefits of dedicated office space. Small teams and remote workers benefit from the use of a shared workspace in the same manner as freelancers and solopreneurs. These teams can meet at a shared workspace like a 9 to 5 job, but they also enjoy the atmosphere and synergy that comes with freelancers and entrepreneurs. The community that is created in a shared workspace is motivated and focused, but also friendly and inspirational.

Shared Workspace Benefits

Using a shared workspace comes with many benefits apart from the provided equipment. Shared workspaces also offer:

  • Infrastructure – By using a shared workspace, you don’t have to think about which bills are due or what supplies your team needs. You also don’t have to worry about taking care of internet outages or plumbing issues. A shared workspace offers the freedom to completely focus on the task at hand.
  • Freedom & Flexibility – Shared workspaces offer the flexibility to work at any location and the freedom to scale your business as you see fit. Having the ability to adapt to your business needs is essential and shared workspaces can grow and change with your needs.
  • Inspiration & Collaboration – As a freelancer or remote worker, inspiration can be hard to achieve at home. By utilizing a shared workspace, inspiration comes from the building design and collaboration with the dynamic people you meet in the office. Amenities in a shared workspace are tailored for motivation and inspiration, which include coffee, tea, water, and snacks.
  • Financial Savings – Shared workspaces significantly reduce overhead costs. Instead of paying for your own office space, associated utilities, and office supplies, you can focus on your work.
